Post Natal

Acupuncture for Pre & Post-natal Support

Many women use acupuncture during pregnancy as it is a safe and non toxic treatment. Acupuncture can provide effective relief for symptoms during pregnancy, such as morning sickness, constipation, indigestion, back ache, headaches, stress and tiredness.

Acupuncture in preparation for labour

Acupuncture can be really useful in preparation for labour. We would suggest starting treatments at around 36 weeks. It may help prepare your body for labour and can help with energy levels, backache, sciatica and pelvic pain. Acupuncture can also help if the baby is in breech position. Leading up to the birth we will provide you with acupressure points to use leading up to and during labour. as well as acupuncture treatments to help promote labour should you go past your due date.

Acupuncture for Post-natal support

The Postnatal period generally refers to the six-weeks following childbirth. During this time the body starts to recover and to return to the way it was before pregnancy. In our society there can sometimes be an assumption and an expectation that a woman will feel completely recovered after this six week period. Many women would recognise that it can take much longer than this to feel ‘back to normal’. Some women find that it can be a struggle and experience low energy, depression and can have continued physical issues. Acupuncture can help increase your energy after birth. It can also be helpful with conditions such as: After pain, bleeding, tiredness, insomnia, haemorrhoids, insufficient or excessive milk flow, Post-natal depression, stress, anxiety, constipation and  joint pain.

Contact our Acupuncturists: Francesca Howell, Alan Hunter if you would like to book an appointment or for more information about how Acupuncture can support you through this period.

Medical Herbalism for Pregnancy & Childbirth

Pregnancy is a wonderful time for most women but it can come with its health challenges too.  It is common for nausea, constipation and backache to accompany it and women are limited in the choices of medicines they can take. Fortunately there are many herbs that can be safely taken throughout pregnancy to ease the journey and many herbs can be used during childbirth too.

After giving birth herbs provide a safe way to help the body to heal and return to normal and herbs can assist in milk production too. Breast-feeding mums can also pass on some safe herbal remedies through their breast milk so that baby can benefit too.

It is extremely important to work with a qualified medical herbalist when taking any herbal remedies during pregnancy and while breast feeding.

Counselling for Pre and Post-natal Support

Are you or your partner pregnant? Or have you just become a new mum or dad?  Or maybe you have a toddler or other children?  Are you finding being a parent more difficult than you imagined or expected? It seems that much of the support we receive throughout pregnancy focuses on the practicalities of the birth and how that will happen, rather than on how a pregnant woman, or her partner, may be feeling about pregnancy or becoming a parent. And pre-natal support can sometimes leave dads feeling a bit sidelined or excluded.

Much of the pre-natal support stops when baby arrives, just at the time most new parents might need it most.  The support needed after your baby is born can relate specifically to your experience of pregnancy and birth.

Becoming a parent – either a mum or a dad – can leave you feeling you’ve lost a sense of yourself. You don’t know what to expect, you don’t know if or how you will cope with being a parent.  Being a parent can sometimes leave you feeling isolated or confused.  And it can happen to any of us. Many people can have some level of post-natal depression but may feel uncomfortable talking about it.

At Southside Therapy Centre, we offer pre and post-natal support via Susan Shaw  who has extensive experience of working with mums and dads with post-natal depression.
