Whether you are trying to conceive naturally or you’re receiving fertility treatment such as IVF, ICSI or IUI, our therapists at Southside Therapy Centre can offer you expert advice and support.
First Fertility Appointment
We offer an initial consultation at the centre which which gives you an opportunity to talk through your history and circumstances. This allows us to tailor a treatment plan to suit your individual needs and see how best we can support you. We will start by taking a full history and talk about your life and lifestyle and look at any fine-tuning that may be helpful. It’s also helpful to look at your own fertility awareness, which allows you to optimise your chances of conceiving. During the consultation we will suggest which therapies would be most useful to you. The Therapists at Southside Therapy Centre work as a team and will work together to tailor your treatment plan to your needs including reviewing your treatments and making any changes that may benefit you.
If you are starting IVF in more than three months, we would suggest a First Fertility appointment to form a treatment plan with our therapists to help prepare you for IVF in the future.
Acupuncture For Fertility
Acupuncture can help prepare your body for conception. The Acupuncturist will look at any menstrual issues such as irregular cycles and painful periods, then start to help regulate your hormones and prepare for conception. Acupuncture can be used to balance hormones and increase blood flow and enhance your chances of conceiving naturally. Acupuncture often focuses on nourishing your energy and increasing the blood supply to the uterus, which helps build a healthy uterine lining. The treatment also aims to increase circulation which can assist with ovulation, and to increase cervical fluids and reduce stress. Acupuncture also aims at improving egg quality and sperm quality if this is an issue. If you are having fertility treatment of any kind then Acupuncture can provide support and help with any side affects of treatment, as well as reducing stress. Feedback from nurses has been that women receiving acupuncture through treatment seem to be more relaxed. There have been a number of studies, which suggest that having Acupuncture during treatment can help increase success rates. Our acupuncturist is able to attend at the GCRM to provide acupuncture before and after an embryo transfer. We can also provide this service at the centre if this suits you.
If you have already started IVF treatment, we would recommend weekly acupuncture sessions.
If you are due to start IVF in less than three months, we would recommend Acupuncture sessions every 10-14 days until treatment begins. You may also feel it would be helpful to book in for a First Fertility appointment or with any of our therapists to support you during treatment.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy For Fertility
CBT has been shown in research studies to be one of the most effective therapies for people dealing with anxiety. Clients experiencing infertility or going through fertility treatment often struggle with anxiety and worry. Clients may also experience negative thoughts which are hard to shake and find it difficult to cope with the emotions they are experiencing. CBT can help unblock some of the thought patterns and help clients support themselves better through the experience.
Fertility counselling offers patients an opportunity to explore their thoughts, feelings, beliefs and their relationships in order to reach a better understanding of the meaning and implications of any choice of action they may make; counselling may also offer support to them as they undergo treatment and may help them to accommodate feelings about the outcome of any treatment.

Herbs can be used with fertility and gynaecological conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, irregular menstrual cycle and heavy or very painful periods. Herbs can also be very useful for women with short and light periods and for women over 35 who are trying to conceive as well as men with low motility or morphology. They can help in cases of sub-clinical hypothyroid and low progesterone or oestrogen. Herbs can also be emotionally supportive. A herbalist looks at your whole health and may work with you on any of these areas to increase your chances of conception.
Nutrition for Fertility
Nutritional Therapy aims to provide you with the best possible intake of all the nutrients to allow you to be as healthy as possible. When nutrients are deficient in the body for any reason, imbalances can occur which may manifest as poor egg or sperm quality, erratic periods and PMS. Dr Jane Jamieson, our nutritionist is also able to offer Hair Mineral Analysis to measure levels of mineral in the hair and identify any toxic metals (such as mercury or lead) that may be present, especially in the case of recurrent miscarriage.
Although working with a Nutritional Therapist is an ongoing process, we offer ‘IVF-Ready Nutrition’ sessions as an introduction on how to make the most of your IVF. Our nutritionists also offer specialist advice for twin pregnancies and recurrent miscarriage.
